"Marketplace" established as a central meeting for Dortmund’s bio scientists

Albert Sickmann opens the 3rd "bio.dortmund marketplace"
Networking is an important aspect of the conference

For the third time in a row ISAS hosted the event "bio.dortmund Marketplace" that took place on October 22, 2013 at the ISAS Campus building. The conference was organized by the City of Dortmund Economic Development Agency together with the BioMedizinZentrum Dortmund and gave insights into current developments and new technologies of the biotech industry in Dortmund. It was also designed to encourage exchange between participants and to create impulses for future cooperation.

About 80 to 90 scientists, entrepreneurs and students visited this year's "marketplace" to hear keynotes and short talks from Professor Herbert Waldmann  (Max Planck Institute of Molecular Physiology), Dr. Sonja Sievers (COMAS), Professor Helmut Meyer (Medical Proteome Center Bochum)  and other top-class speakers. The afternoon talks displayed the great variety of research projects in Dortmund, covering topics such as bioinformatics, optimizing enzymes or new ways of cooperation for drug discovery. The talk program was accompanied by a poster exhibition that mainly allowed younger scientists to present their work. The best three posters were also awarded a small poster prize.

The media coverage of the 3rd marketplace was remarkable: The Dortmund studio of the WDR took the chance to present Dortmund as a biotechnology site and also made the event "topic of the day" on their website.

When science meets politics

On October 16, the North Rhine-Westphalian Leibniz institutes again organized "Leibniz at the NRW state parliament", a meeting of scientists and politicians. NRW representatives were invited to book one-hour meetings with Leibniz scientists on that day. The scientists visited the representatives at the state parliament in Düsseldorf and discussed scientific topics of social relevance with them.

The event seems to strike a chord: The representatives always make full use of the chance to get in touch with scientists. This year, 42 parliamentarians booked a total of 57 meetings, making some of the scientists walk around the state parliament for the whole day.

The 2013 "Leibniz at the NRW state parliament" was the fourth meeting of Leibniz scientists and NRW representatives since 2009. This year, the institutes also added an on-site “Leibniz Lunch” to the schedule, so that scientists and representatives were able to meet for casual conversation.

With eleven of the 87 Leibniz institutes and a total of 570 Leibniz scientists, NRW has developed into an important part of Germany’s scientific landscape. The NRW Leibniz institutes intend to promote the dialogue between politics and science to better utilize the potential and possibilities of this region and its scientific facilities.
